Weidmann Designs and Builds Insulation System for the Most Advanced Furnace Transformer in the Steel Industry
Nov 27, 2006 — The Weidmann organization has decades of experience and expertise designing and building insulation systems for all types of transformers, and this shell form furnace transformer was the first of its type to be upgraded with a new NOMEX? insulation system. The project required the development of new manufacturing processes, and it was necessary to design and build some specialized equipment. The NOMEX? insulation system upgrade increased load capacity by 20%. The cost for the insulation system upgrade was only incrementally more than a rewind in-kind. The unit runs significantly cooler than it did previously, but the biggest value is in the long-term reliability. It has the best possible insulation system with double the protection. When running at the same power, the unit runs much cooler, and it won’t deteriorate if it heats up. An additional benefit of running cooler is energy savings, which means saving money. The ability to increase the capacity through high temperature insulation systems presents a host of benefits. The use of NOMEX? insulation materials can provide enhanced performance, long-term life and improved reliability.

Corrosive Sulfur in Insulating Oil Can Cause Premature Failure
Apr 6, 2006 — More frequent testing for Corrosive Sulfur Compounds is being performed by Weidmann-ACTI Laboratories. Several recent transformer and reactor failures caused by a break down of sulfur molecules in insulating oil have indicated an increased need for the modified ASTM D-1275 test. The modified ASTM D-1275 test involves both higher temperatures and longer heating times. Under these laboratory conditions, the compounds that are stable under less severe conditions break down and produce detectable corrosive sulfur. If you have any questions about the integrity of your insulation, it is highly recommended that you test your oil-filled equipment to evaluate any risks associated with continued use.

Mobile Transformer Optimization Project a Success for VELCO!
Dec 13, 2005 — Weidmann-ACTI recently completed a project to help VELCO, the company that owns and operates transmission power lines in the state of Vermont, re-engineer a marginally portable back-up transformer into a state-of-the-art, truly mobile transformer to enhance grid reliability and reduce outage down-times and costs. Weidmann-ACTI managed end-to-end overhaul of the transformer and its trailer to reduce size and weight, increase maneuverability and performance, and improve onsite operation of the unit. “The transformer is truly mobile now, capable of being pressed into service at a moment’s notice. VELCO estimates the installation time to be less than 12 hours now”, said Jefferey Wright, VELCO manager of safety and asset maintenance. The project is the cover-page article in November issue of TD World magazine.
Network Transformer Recommended Diagnostic Tests
Aug 23, 2005 — In the past, most network transformers were not evaluated with DGA because of the perceived analysis costs and the relatively affordable transformer replacement costs. This protocol did not consider the liabilities associated with a network transformer failure that resulted in personal injury. Several utilities have experienced network transformer failures in densely populated metropolitan areas that have resulted in injuries to citizens. The resulting liability payments would have paid for decades of diagnostic testing that may have prevented these accidents.
